# Person Following

Have the robot follow a person autonomously.

Person following lets the robot pick out a person and keep pace with them as they move — the basis for guide, companion, and "follow me" behaviors. It ties perception (detecting and tracking the person) to navigation: the robot keeps a following distance and uses the same [obstacle avoidance](/full-autonomy-guidelines/features/obstacle-avoidance.md) as everything else, so it follows safely rather than blindly.

This runs as part of the managed OM1 autonomy stack. You enable it and tune its behavior — things like follow distance and how a target is chosen — through the [OpenMind portal](https://portal.openmind.com) rather than the robot's local API. How well it tracks depends on the platform's sensors and the lighting, and availability depends on your plan.

To turn it on for a deployment, talk to your OpenMind contact. Related: [Navigation](/full-autonomy-guidelines/features/navigation.md) and [Obstacle Avoidance](/full-autonomy-guidelines/features/obstacle-avoidance.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.openmind.com/full-autonomy-guidelines/features/person-following.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
